In â€Å"Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Tale of Wall Street†, Herman Melville using the elements of fiction to effectively stresses the importance of communication and how isolation can negatively affect yourself and those around you. The story is about Bartleby, a lonely copyist for a lawyer’s office who decides that he does not feel like working anymore. We all have those days where we just do not feel like working. Your boss walks up to you, asks you to do something, and you think silently in your head, â€Å"I would prefer not to†. Not all of us have the courage to say so, but Bartleby did. He even had the audacity to continue to show up at the office after. The story is told through the point of view of the lawyer. This allows the reader o understand the dynamics of the office, get to know Bartleby, and yet still have mystery of his origins. Through the lawyer the reader is also shown the stages of isolation that Bartleby goes through and how this affects the lawyer. The narrator, being a lawyer also has some significance to the story. Lawyers have been given the reputation to have the â€Å"know it all† vibe. As Bartleby’s depression increases and he starts refusing the lawyers request, the lawyer becomes more curious about Bartleby. As time goes on the lawyer still cannot quite figure him out and this frustrates him. This is no longer the easy going lawyer the author introduced in the beginning of the story.
