Deficit College Students Face Today the average college student spends eight hundred seventy four dollars on a nineteen unit college semester. Plus an average of five hundred dollars for their textbooks that semester. The numbers mentioned don’t even include health fees, parking passes, necessary at home tools, or the cost of living. How do you think college students pay for everything? Some students receive financial aid but the majority do not qualify for aid. Many students work part time jobs to afford everything but still have to juggle the responsibilities of bills they already have plus the outrageous cost of college. It seems like in today’s world, the cost of college keeps raising and raising forcing students into huge amounts of debt. O’Brien author of the article â€Å"A ‘necessary’ of modern life? A very expensive college education† shares the cost of attending Middlebury College in Vermont. O’Brien states that the cost in 18 44 to attend Middlebury College was eighty-three dollars. That included tuition, room, library, and all other fees (1). In 1996-1997 the cost raised to twenty eight thousand dollars (1).. Old customs and traditions reign supreme, not because it is believed such ways of life are best, but rather because they have worked for many years despite harsh conditions. In response to Brother Gu’s suggestion of joining communist South China’s progress, Cuiqiao’s widower father put it best: â€Å"Farmer’s have their own rules.† One member of this society is not as eager to keep the status quo. Cuiqiao is seen in the beginning apprehensively observing an arranged marriage. Her older sister had been beaten by her betrothed and the audience is never informed on how her mother died. In â€Å"Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Tale of Wall Street†, Herman Melville using the elements of fiction to effectively stresses the importance of communication and how isolation can negatively affect yourself and those around you. The story is about Bartleby, a lonely copyist for a lawyer’s office who decides that he does not feel like working anymore. We all have those days where we just do not feel like working. Your boss walks up to you, asks you to do something, and you think silently in your head, â€Å"I would prefer not to†. Not all of us have the courage to say so, but Bartleby did. He even had the audacity to continue to show up at the office after. The story is told through the point of view of the lawyer. This allows the reader o understand the dynamics of the office, get to know Bartleby, and yet still have mystery of his origins. Through the lawyer the reader is also shown the stages of isolation that Bartleby goes through and how this affects the lawyer. The narrator, being a lawyer also has some significance to the story. Lawyers have been given the reputation to have the â€Å"know it all† vibe. As Bartleby’s depression increases and he starts refusing the lawyers request, the lawyer becomes more curious about Bartleby. As time goes on the lawyer still cannot quite figure him out and this frustrates him. This is no longer the easy going lawyer the author introduced in the beginning of the story. Find Waldo, each page instructs, but how? What if each of us is Waldo, drawn into a pandemonium that we must first make sense of? Some drawings are simpler than others, and Waldo can be found in less time. Others require a break, to come back and reassess Waldo’s location. Still others implore the help of another person. Once Waldo is found, though, the page is turned. We, the Waldos, are lost once again. Likely without knowing it, British illustrator Martin Handford created a metaphor for the ultimate search in life: the search to find oneself. My quest to find Waldo took me seventeen years- essentially my entire life.
